    Description

Mexican/American Sterling Silver Opal Artisan Mask Pin c1960s
Offered in this sale is an unusual piece of American or possibly Mexican
sterling silver in the form of a shield shaped brooch. The shield is divided
into three sections: the left section is set with a Mayan or Olmec inspired mask
carved of opal and opal matrix against a brushed ground, the right side of the
shield has an irregularly formed star design against an oxidized brushed ground,
and the top triangle has been left plain. While the overall style and especially
the carved stone face give this the look of a Mexican piece, the maker's mark of
PEP and the fact that it is simply stamped Sterling indicate that it is
American in origin, probably from the 1960's or so.
Marks: Maker's mark PEP, stamped Sterling.
    Dimensions: 2 1/4 inches wide x 2 inches high.
    Weight: 30.8
    grams.
Condition: Excellent, light surface wear from age/use but no breaks and no
repairs.  The stone is securely bezel set.  There are no chips and no cracks
