    DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
    Los Castillo (1939-Present):
Their story opens during the Mexican silver Renaissance in the second quarter of the twentieth century guided by Fred Davis and William Spratling. Spratling’s workshop (taller) in Taxco, Mexico, provided the training for many young men who later went on to establish studios of their own. One of Spratling’s earliest apprentices was Antonio Castillo who joined Spratling in 1933 at the age of sixteen, followed by his brothers. Antonio rose to the level of Maestro and with his brothers left Spratling in 1939 to begin their own taller, Los Castillo. The result was
the production of some of the most creative and innovative silver jewelry, hollowware, and flatware in the world. In the early years, Antonio's wife, Margot van Voorhies (‘Margot de Taxco’), and cousin, Salvador Terán, participated in the design process for the taller. When Don Antonio Castillo passed away in 2000, Taxco lost a legend.
The Los Castillo Taller, however, continues on with its innovative designs
and is overseen by Emilia Castillo, Don Antonio’s daughter, a skilled designer in her own right.
    METAL:
    Sterling Silver
    DETAILS:
    ~
    Rare
c.1940s Handwrought Matching Necklace & Earrings Set
~ Necklace: Comprised of linked Stylized Floral Panels; 15.5” Choker length & panels are 1” x 3/4”; Spring Ring clasp signed Sterling
~ Earrings: Same design & measurements as the necklace panels; Screw Backs (may be converted to pierced)
~ Stamps: Los Castillo, Sterling, Taxco, Made in Mexico, 595 (design #)
~ This is a rarely seen set produced in the early years of the taller. None of the pieces have an Eagle assay mark and this dates it to pre-1948. *I’ve seen a brooch and it does not have the Eagle either. I’m sure a bracelet was also made, but I’ve yet to lay eyes on it.
~ The last 3 photos (for reference only) are of Don Antonio & the Los Castillo taller. In photo 11, Antonio is pictured far right next to seated, William Spratling. The other two are Hector Aguilar & Antonio Pineda respectively.
    CONDITION:
    Excellent
    Vintage condition
considering its age. Surface wear is noticeable on close inspection. The set is loaded with Patina as I’ve not polished it (nor would I ever). Many prefer a patinated look and so I leave the polishing to the buyer’s discretion.
